Lucania. Thurium. Circa 280-270 BC. Uncertain denomination (Bronze, 12.2 mm, 1.90 g). Laureate head of Apollo left. Rev. Tripod; on right, ΘΟΥ; on left, ΑXΑΙ. HN Italy 1925b (AΨΑΙ). Dark green patina. Good Very Fine. Exceedingly Rare and of numismatic importance. An unusual and seemingly unique inscription distinguishes the reverse of this exceptionally rare bronze of Thurii. The conventional reading, Apsai- (ΑΨΑΙ), remains uncertain, and an alternative interpretation as ΑΧΑΙ[ΟΣ/ΩΝ] may be worth considering, possibly referring to Achaios or even to the Achaean tribe. The latter hypothesis is particularly intriguing in light of Diodorus Siculus (12.11), who relates that Thurii's citizen body was divided into ten tribes reflecting their members' ethnic origins, one of them Achaean. The inscription thus presents a tantalizing numismatic enigma, whose interpretation may hold further historical significance. From the Poor Scholar Collection.
