Varie - Central Asia and India KUSHAN: Vima Kadphises (113-127), AE tetradrachm (17,27 g; 28,18 mm). Obv: King standing, sacrificing over altar; in left field, filleted trident; in right field, tamgha e club. Rev: Siva standing facing, holding trident, before the bull Nandi standing right; in upper left field, triratna/Nandi footprint. MK 762; ANS Kushan 300-2. Good Very Fine. Beautiful black green patina The symbol in the left field of the reverse is usually called the Buddhist "triratna" or "three jewels." The symbol is associated with "Buddha's footprint", and combines a lotus petal, a diamond rod, and the three jewels proper, symbolizing the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. Interestingly, the triratna is quite similar to the Hindu symbol for Nandi's footprint, Nandi being Shiva's bull depicted on the reverse. The Kushans seem to have been big on religious pluralism, and found a nice expression of it here.
