P. Nerva. AR Denarius, 113-112 BC. Obv. Helmeted bust of Roma left, holding shield in left hand and spear over shoulder in right; in left field, X with central bar (XVI monogram); above helmet, crescent and in right field, ROMA. Rev. Voting scene: three citizens in the comitium; one of them placing ballot in cista; in middle field above, a tabella inscribed P; below, P. NERVA. Cr. 292/1; B. (Licinia) 7. AR. 3.95 g. 17.50 mm. Scarce. Sound metal and full weight. Choice and lustrous, with iridescent hues. Interesting X graffito (the early mark of value) on both sides. Good VF. Circa 140 BC the denarius was retariffed from ten to sixteen asses. The new mark of value XVI, first appeared on the denarius of L.Julius Bursio in BC 141, was soon replaced by a XVI monogram (X with central bar) in BC 136.
