Lot # 712 - Study Forgeries. Lucanian Velia "Diobol". 19th century (Silver, 12.7 mm, 1.00 g). Head of Athena left, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with hippocamp on bowl. Rev. Lion walking right; above, Φ-I flanking ornate trident head; in ex. YEΛHTΩN. Cfr. HN Italy 1312 (Didrachm, Philistion Group). Fantasy coin. Cabinet tone. Very Rare type.

Simonetta, "The Coins of the Cappadocian Kings", 1977, p. 12, pl. VII,10 (this coin). Parthica 2007, p. 115, pl. XXX,8a-b (this coin). As of today, three specimens of this rare and dangerous forgery are known, all of them featuring a reverse die taken from a brockage drachm: the one in the British Museum (BMC 8), one in the Landesmuseum in Zürich, and this one from the Simonetta Collection. NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P, Laureate head right, with aegis. Rev. SECV RI TAS P R / S C, Emperor, togate, standing right, clasping hand with soldier; between them, garlanded altar; to right and behind, three more soldiers, holding signa and aquilae. Klawans -. Johnson-Martini 1401 (obverse of Nero), and 1486 (reverse of Otho). British Museum Collections B.12758. Cast and subsequently reworked with a burin, one of the production techniques documented in Cavino's goldsmith workshop. Splendid Renaissance patina. Very Rare type.

Lot # 719 - Study Forgeries. Diva Faustina Maior "Sestertius". 20th century (Bronze, 34.81 mm, 27.76 g). DIVA AVGVSTA FAVSTINA, Veiled and draped bust right. Rev. CON SECR ATIO / S C, Empress ascends to the sky on a Victory flying to the right, holding a lit torch. Cfr. RIC III 1132. Cayon 65. Banti III.1, p. 29, n. 56. Struck using the 'transfer dies' technique on a flan from an original ancient sestertius, part of the legend can be seen on the obverse at 5 o’clock. Artificially patinated.

Rev. [TR P VII IMP IIII / COS III P P], Jupiter, leaning on scepter, seated slightly right on the seven hills of Rome; at right, emperor standing left, presenting Victory to Jupiter, and being crowned by Virtus standing left behind him. SALVS REI - PVBLICAE / CONOB, Victory seated right, writing Christogram on shield held on small column. Fantasy coin, with no comparisons in RIC IX, engraved in a "barbaric" style.
