About VF. While Theoderic carefully upheld a display of respect toward Constantinople in his coinage, Theodahad took a bold step by featuring his own portrait. As noted by Grierson (p. 11), these folles stand out as some of the most remarkable coins struck by any Germanic ruler of the fifth or sixth centuries.

Above, cross. Below, [R]AV. Ranieri 847-9; MEC 1, 324. AE. 1.43 g. 14 mm. RRR. Extremely rare. Good condition for issue. Pleasant green patina. VF. Aistulfus, king of the Longobards, conquered Ravenna in the spring or summer of 751. He brought a revolutionary innovation in numismatics, issuing coins minted in Ravenna that, unique in their kind in the Longobard series in northern Italy, completely borrow the bizantine model and no longer only as an archetype of inspiration. In Ravenna, Aistulfus minted coins in three denominals; solidus, tremissis and follis, in a period of time presumably from 751 to 755. Very few specimens have come down to us of these coins, altogether less than twenty, of all types and metals. Cfr. Gennari-Rossini 2018.
