Hexastyle temple of Diva Faustina; sculptures in pediment; facing quadriga and two victories on roof.RIC 388 (Pius).This temple was first dedicated to the empress Faustina the Elder, who was deified in 141 AD shortly after her death, and twenty years later to her husband, the now divine Antoninus Pius. Still visible today in the Roman Forum, the façade, which has lost its tympanum, has preserved its columns and dedicatory inscription. In 161, upon the emperor's death, the Senate decreed that the temple be dedicated to both of them, and so the inscription was updated from “Divae Faustinae ex S(enatus) C(onsulto)” to be preceded by the name of “Divus Antoninus.” Condition: Near extremely fine.Weight: 3.01 g. Concordia standing left, holding aquila and signum.RIC 1.Marcus Didius Severus Julianus was born in Mediolanum in AD 133 and grew up in the house of Marcus Aurelius, brought up by his mother, Domitia Lucilla, thanks to whom he was elected to the vigintivirate. Didius Julianus then distinguished himself in Germania against the Chauci and was awarded the consulship in 175. When Pertinace was assassinated, Didius Julianus proposed himself as his successor in a manner that, according to the historian Cassius Dione, was scandalous and infamous. Julian is said to have offered to the praetorians a large sum of money in exchange for the empire. Similarly, however, Sulpicianus, father-in-law of the late Pertinace, behaved in a sort of auction to buy the throne. Didius Julianus prevailed, winning power with 30,000 sesterces paid to each praetorian, but also promising to rehabilitate the memory of Commodus. His first action as emperor was in fact to bring down the head of the praetorian prefect Quintus Aemilius Leto, who had taken part in the conspiracy with Cassius Dion in 192 and was guilty of the murder of Commodu Didius Julian's power was short-lived, however, because of Septimius Severus, governor of Pannonia Superior, who accused him of murdering Pertinaces and was supported by the people. Faced with the advance of Septimius Severus, Didius Severus was abandoned by the legionaries of the Danube and also by the Praetorians, without whom it was impossible to maintain power in Rome. (obv. legend).Pescennius Niger came from a family of equestrian rank, probably from Aquinum. He joined the Senate in 180, was suffect consul, and in 183 fought against the barbarians in Dacia. In 188, Emperor Commodus sent him to Gaul against the bands of deserters commanded by Maternus, then entrusted him with the government of Syria. On hearing of the death of Commodus and then Pertinax, Pescennius had himself proclaimed emperor in Antioch (April 193). In fact, it seems that the Roman people had acclaimed him during the brief principality of Didius Julianus, considered by them to be the murderer of Pertinax, during the games in the Circus Maximus. He obtained recognition from the provinces of Asia Minor, the East, Egypt, and the king of the Parthians, while Armenia remained neutral. Meanwhile, in the West, power was seized by Septimius Severus, who was recognized by the Senate. Pescennius, with nine legions, undertook to defend Asia and went to Byzantium, which supported him. Here he was besieged by Septimius' troops, commanded by L. Marius Maximus Perpetuus. Septimius' army also obtained important victories at Cyzicus and Nicaea. This cost Pescennius the loss of Asia Minor and Egypt, also giving rise to rebellions in Arabia, Syria, and Palestine. The decisive battle took place at Issus, where Pescennius was severely defeated and forced to flee to Antioch, from where he tried to reach the king of the Parthians, but was killed in 194. The coins of Pescennius Niger have always been among the most desired by collectors, as evidenced by numerous accounts dating back to the 17th century, which considered his issues to be among the rarest and most prized. Aquila (legionary eagle) flanked by two standards.RIC 12.Legio XI Claudia, together with the XI, was recruited by Julius Caesar for the campaign against the Helvetii in 58 BC, and he himself oversaw their meticulous and demanding training in order to come to the aid of the Gallic tribes invaded by the enemy. The Helvetii were defeated in the Battle of Bibracte. The legion was involved in numerous military campaigns and also played an important role under Septimius Severus, participating in his campaign against his eastern rival Pescennius Niger. They besieged Byzantium, fought at Issus, and took part in Severus' campaigns against the Parthian Empire, which ended with the capture of Ctesiphon (198). Later, during the conflict between Gallienus and Postumus, Legio XI supported Gallienus, for which it was awarded the titles Pia Fidelis V V (five times faithful and loyal) and Pia VI Fidelis VI.
