Austria. Maria Theresa (1740-1780). Lot of four (4) AR Taler, dated 1780, SF. AR. Since the death of Maria Theresa in 1780, the coin has always been dated 1780. After introducing the decimal system (1 Gulden = 100 Kreuzer) in 1858, it lost its status as a currency in Austria. The 'Maria Theresa Thaler' continues to be produced by the Austrian Mint in Vienna.

Rudolph Graf von Wrbna-Freudenthal was a high-ranking official in the Austrian Empire. His career milestones were: 1790 Hofrat in the Court Chamber for Coinage and Mining, 1806 Chief Chamberlain and personal advisor and companion of the emperor responsible for his safety during travels. 1811 he was responsible for the organising of the issue and redemption of the new paper-money which was essentially a state-credit system. He received the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary in 1806 which was the highest civil order in the Habsburg Monarchy.

The portrait on the obverse was modelled after a painting of Etienne Wauquier which was auctioned off in 1841.

Elisa Bonaparte was the sister of Napoleon and he created this principality for her on territories controlled by the French Empire. Elisa was the ruling princess, her husband was just prince in title. The principality adopted the French currency. Later it was incorporated in the Duchy of Tuscany and stood under direct French rule, although it never was a Departement of France. It was dissolved by the Congress of Vienna after the defeat of Napoleon.
