BAΣIΛEΩΣ / MEΓAΛOY / APΣAKOY / ΦIΛEΛΛHNOΣ, Herakles standing left, holding skyphos, club and lion skin; in exergue, monogram. Sellwood 13.2. Sunrise 260. Shore 35. BMC 50. Lightly toned. A beautiful specimen with an attractive portrait. About Extremely Fine. Very Rare. Mithradates I, the first Parthian king to adopt the Achaemenid title “King of Kings,” transformed Parthia from a minor satrapy into a formidable empire. Following the capture of Seleukeia on the Tigris in 141 BC, he repurposed its major Hellenistic mint for his own royal issues. The resulting tetradrachms, stylistically Greek, feature a powerful bearded portrait and a reverse depicting Herakles—drawing a parallel between the hero’s labors and the king’s achievements. The Greek legends name him “Great King Arsakes” and “Friend of the Greeks,” a clear gesture to win over his Hellenized subjects.
