Time of the Caesar's Civil War. Identification tag. Circa mid-1st century BC (Bone, 56.87 x 25.84 mm). Inscription on one side: HOSTILIVS / SASERNA. Cf. Crawford, RRC, 448 Series. Excellent state of preservation and fine paleography for the period. Four small nail holes at the corners indicate it was meant to be affixed.
The gens Hostilia was an ancient patrician family, already present in the time of Romulus and most likely among the original hundred gentes mentioned by the historian Livy. The Saserna branch is known for its political and military support of Julius Caesar. Notable members include Gaius, Publius, and most famously Lucius, who, according to some sources, died at the Battle of Pharsalus. Lucius Saserna struck coin issues during the Civil War between Caesar and Pompey, all marked by pro-Caesarian propaganda exalting Caesar’s victorious Gallic campaigns.
