Lot # 190
Ptolemaic kings of Egypt. Alexandria. Cleopatra VII Thea Neotera, 51-31 BC. 40 Drachm. (Bronze, 21.00 mm, 7.72 g). Alexandria 51-30 BC. Diademed and draped bust right with hair tucked in small chignon at base of head. Rev. [of difficult interpretation or reading] ΚΛΕOΠΑΤΡΑΣ-ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ Eagle standing left on thunderbolt with closed wings; cornucopia in left field, M in right field. Svoronos 1872. SNG Copenhagen 422. Weiser 184. Fine portrait, Very Fine. Ex Naville Numismatics Ltd, Auction 79, 12.02 2023, lot 179. Here we have the second bronze numeral minted by Cleopatra VII with her own portrait on the obverse, a coin with a value of 40, halved compared to that of the previous no. 189 in the collection, but from a numismatic point of view even rarer than that. It is generally slightly corroded, but the portrait is of fine style, intact and legible in every detail.
