Geissen -. Very rare. Green and brown patina. Exceptionally fine style. Extremely Fine. EX Classic Numismatic Group Inc., Auction 105, 10.05 2017, lot 599. Truly exceptional Domitian Hemidrachm for various reasons: preservation practically as if not circulated; original emerald green patina on the entire coin; grandmaster style of engraving on both sides; statuesque images in very high relief. In short, a numismatic jewel with a unique variant issued to celebrate Domitian's "decennalia" in 90-91 AD. It was the subject of an article of mine on NAC 2017 (pp. 109-117): Domiziano a Roma, Alessandria e Copenhagen – una scoperta. The authors of RPC note in their introductory comments for Domitian that “From year 10 the style of the engraving improves dramatically and a number of variant bust types are found.” This is an understatement, as this is one of the best examples of engraving work from the Alexandrian mint seen by this cataloguer, and most likely executed by an artist brought to Alexandria from Rome or in one of the mints in Asia Minor.
