We are at the last months of life of Hadrian, who died in Baia on 10 July 138 AD. This tetradrachm portrays the aged emperor seriously ill. On the obverse the face of the sovereign seems to turn and get lost towards an undefined and lost horizon. On the reverse appears the Pronoia, that is the divinized providence suggesting, with reference to stoic belief, the divine and rational fate that governs the events of the world of humans predicting their events and ensuring that they take place in the best way. It seems obvious the call to resignation of Hadrian in front of the destiny that will lead him to the imminent and inescapable transit in the underworld. But the resurgent phoenix also shows you the hope of a new life beyond life. In short, a coin with deep metaphysical and human meaning at the same time.
