Lot # 250
Egypt. Alexandria. Hadrian, 117-138. Dichalkon. (Bronze, 15.81 mm, 1.79 g). Nome Pelusion. Dated RY 11 = AD 126/7. Laureate head right with slight drapery. Rev. ΠHΛOY LIA Pomegranate. Geissen 3419. BMC 46. Dattari 6348 + Tav. XXXV. Milne 1248. RPC III 6533. Emmett 1321. An exceptional specimen with a fantastic (if tiny) portrait. It is certainly the finest known of this very rare issue. Extremely Fine. Ex Empire Coins, Auction 8. 07.12.1987, lot 844. Here is a small and very rare coin of the Nomes of admirable preservation and with an original black glossy tar patina that makes the images shine. Admirable the minimal portrait of Hadrian so much detailed and recognizable despite the obverse with no inscription. The pomegranate fruit, symbol of the Nomo of Pelusium linked to the funerary cult of Harpokrates, is realistic and plastic on the reverse.
