Egypt. Alexandria. Hadrian, 117-138. Chalkon. (Bronze, 12.04 mm, 1.04 g). Dated RY 9 = AD 124/5. Anepigraph. Laureate bust right with drapery on left shoulder; I in field. Rev. Cornucopia; to either side L – EN. Dattari 1913. Emmett-. RPC III 5546.9 (this specimen). Dark green-brown patina. Rare.Good Very Fine. From Kerry Wetterstrom Collection. Ex Harvey J. Hoffer Collection (Harmer Rooke, December 12, 1986) lot 1030 (part of). Ex CAN Ltd., Sale XIV, 04.12.1990, lot 38. It is very difficult to obtain a specimen of the smallest numeral issued by the mint of Alexandria - the bronze chalkon - precisely because of its very small size (average diameter of 1 cm and weight of about one gram), which fatally condemns it to dispersion. The example offered here is of special preservation and sharpness, displays the minimal features described above, and allows for easy recognition of the engraved images: both the very small and intact laureate imperial head on the obverse and the auspicious cornucopia on the reverse, all immersed in a limpid, original green-brown patina.
