Apart from the imperfections of the mintage, this Antoninus Pius’s diobol is of remarkable stylistic and descriptive quality on both sides, from the serene and strong-willed portrait of the emperor on the obverse to the lively and sprightly Agatodaemon on the reverse, which is the beneficent and pacifying male cobra bearing on his head the pshent, the pharaonic royal crown, and also the serpent sacred to Zeus-Serapis, as well as patron of harvests, vineyards and cities.
