Hadrian, 117-138. Denarius. Rome. AD 134-138 (Silver, 18.61 mm, 3.05 g). HADRIANVS - AVG COS III P P, Laureate head right. Rev. AEGYPTOS, Egypt reclining left on basket, holding sistrum and resting elbow on basket of fruit; in front, ibis standing on a column. RIC II.3 1481. Cohen 103. BMCRE 797. Lightly toned. Amazing specimen. Good Extremely Fine. From the Giovanni Maria Staffieri Collection; ex Bertolami Fine Arts 67, 11 July 2019, lot 420. From the pen of G.M.S.: This silver denarius of Hadrian belongs to a series of imperial coins from the Latin area, also issued in bronze and gold, designed to commemorate the emperor's journey to the East and Egypt in AD 129-131. The coin is in a splendid state of preservation: the senile portrait of Hadrian is reproduced with masterly style, as is the Isis with chiton and peplos lying softly on the lectisternium and bearing the canonical sistrum. Singular on the left is the image of the small ibis perched on the capital of a small column in front of the deity.
