Ex Nomos Obolos 2 (2015), lot 215. This issue is among the first to bear witness to Tiberius' adoption and Augustus' decision to name him as his heir. The issue of succession was crucial for Augustus in order to consolidate his legacy. Having had no children with Livia Drusilla, he initially adopted his nephews Gaius and Lucius, sons of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and Julia, presenting them to the people as his designated heirs and conferring upon them extraordinary titles and powers for their young age. However, the premature death of his two grandsons (between 2 and 4 AD) and of Agrippa forced Augustus to revise his plans, and so he adopted Tiberius, the son of Livia and her previous husband, Tiberius Claudius Nero.
