After the battles of Castiglione and Peschiera, Napoleon evacuated his troops from the Veneto to move them toward Mantua, considered one of the most important fortresses in Europe. The forces of the Corsican general pressed on Mantua, and after bloody fighting, the war council and commander Wurmser agreed to the capitulation of the Virgilian city. (Cf. E.
