Lot # 441 - Study Forgeries. Etruria, Populonia "20 Asses". Italy, 1980s (Silver, 22 mm, 7.86 g). Facing Gorgoneion; below, X X (mark of value). Rev. Two caducei. Cf. IAPN BOC, vol. 15, n. 1, 1990, Example 7a (It was said to be part of a hoard allegedly discovered in Tuscany in 1989, with the intent to mislead scholars and collectors). Struck.

Lot # 442 - Study Forgeries. Siculo-Punic, Entella "Tetradrachm". Sicily, 1980s - 1990s (Silver, 24 mm, 17.07 g). Head of Tanit-Persephone left; four dolphins around. Rev. Horse's head left; palm tree behind; Punic script ('MMHNT = People of the Camp) below. Cfr. Jenkins, Punic 187 (O55/R164). A dangerous forgery produced with the transfer-die technique, struck on a genuine ancient flan and subsequently darkened with graphite (commonly from pencil tips).

Lot # 443 - Study Forgeries. Lysimachos, "Drachm". Mid 19th century (Silver, 18 mm, 3.29 g). Head of Alexander the Great right, with horn of Ammon. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ, Athena seated left, holding Nike. The style of the obverse is reminiscent of the portraits created by the Udine-based forger Luigi Cigoi; however, the publication dedicated to him (L. Brunetti, "Opus Monetale Cigoi", Bologna 1966) includes only Roman and medieval coins, with no mention of Greek ones.

CAESAR, Aeneas standing left, carrying Palladium and bearing Anchises on his shoulder. Cast, with green artificial patina. Token likely commissioned by a Latvian, Estonian, or Polish individual named Julian or Juhan Potivar (or Potiwar).

Saint-George slaying the Dragon. Originally gilt. Below the sovereign’s neck, instead of the usual initials of the engraver De S. (Georges William de Saulles), the letters G.O. appear — could these be the initials of the forger?

Includes: a Titus sestertius with the Colosseum, 1990s; a Nero Paduan sestertius with the Decursio, after Giovanni da Cavino (cf. Martini, Cavino, Milano, Civ. Racc. Num., pp. 93, 1417); two Bulgarian denarii featuring Pescennius Niger and Furius Brocchus, 1980s; a Hadrian denarius with Italia, 1980s (Parmalat Mister Day “Monete Romane” series, token no. 12); and a fiorino from Firenze with a scorpion, 1990s.
