Dritto Rovescio
Lot # 200
Africa. Ethiopia, Aksum. Mhdys. AE Unit, c. 400-450 AD. D/ Draped bust right wearing headcloth, flanked by grain ears; Ge'ez legend 'MHDYS king of Aksum' around. R/ Cross potent, within circular border; Ge'ez legend 'by this victorious, by the cross' around. Hahn, Aksumite 30; Hahn & Keck 41; SACAM 244/54. AE. 1.24 g. 15 mm. VF. The reverse bears the remarkable legend “May this be pleasing to the people,” a formula that, in the Christian issues of Aksum, may be understood as referring to the Cross itself. More than a monetary device, the type expresses the spiritual transformation of the kingdom under its Christian rulers, presenting the Cross not only as a symbol of faith but as a divinely sanctioned emblem offered to, and embraced by, the nation.
