Greek Italy. Southern Lucania, Thurium. AR Stater, 410-400 BC. D/ Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with olive wreath; above visor, Φ. R/ ΘOYPIΩN. Bull standing left, head lowered; below, bird left; in exergue, fish left. HN Italy 1782; HGC 1 1259. AR. 7.73 g. 21 mm. R. The letter Φ, which appears on both obverse and reverse, has sometimes been interpreted as an artist's signature. The bird on the reverse, if intended as a finch, would be a canting pun for Phrygillos, an artist who signed dies at Syracuse during the last decade of the fifth century. F/About VF.
