The hound of Segesta is among the most distinctive symbols in Sicilian numismatics. Far from being a mere animal type, it represents the river-god Krimissos, who, according to tradition, protected the Elymian city in canine form. Its presence on the coinage expresses local identity, divine guardianship, and a vigilant spirit in a region marked by constant conflict. The Segestan hound thus embodies both mythological heritage and civic pride, making this issue uniquely compelling within the Classical series.
