Vespasian, 69-79. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 35.5 mm, 24.65 g), Rome, 71. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG P M T P P P COS III, Laureate and draped bust left. Rev. S - C, Mars advancing right, holding spear and trophy over shoulder. RIC II.1, 115 (from the E.R. Hart Collection, in the Blackburn Museum). Cohen 442. BNF 541. Glossy brownish patina. 19th-century restoration with wax or resin along a section of the edge and the lower part of the reverse. A pair of dies of remarkable style, featuring a portrait of particularly refined execution. Good Very Fine. Very Rare.

 

Comes with the original P. & P. Santamaria envelope, dating from 1933 to the 1950s.
