Sicily. Panormos (as Ziz). Siculo-Punic Coinage, circa 390-330 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30.64 mm, 16.96 g). 'SYS' (in Punic, partially visible), Charioteer driving slow quadriga left, holding reins with both hands; above, Nike flying left, crowning horses; border of dots. Rev. Female head of nymph (or Tanit-Arethusa) left, wearing ampyx in hair, single-pendant earring and necklace; around, four dolphins; all within shallow incuse circle. Jenkins, SNR 57 (1978), pl. 24 (Addenda), PT 43a (O12/R new, same dies), the reverse die is clearly distinct from that of SNR 50, pl. 11, 42 (less stocky face and more elongated neck). Cf. Viola CNP 288. Buceti 68 (same obverse die). HGC 2, 1015 (same obverse die). Lightly toned. An impressive coin, also due to its irregular shaped flan, slightly oblong. Good Very Fine. Extremely Rare variety.
