Sicily. Segesta. Circa 455-440 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 23.22 mm, 8.51 g). Hound, or the personification of the river god Krimisos, standing left, head turned backward; above, murex shell; border of dots. Rev. [ΣEΓ]ΕΣTΑΖΙΒ (retrograde), Head of nymph Aigeste left with a round earring, the hair at the back of the head is in chignon, which is tied up with a wide band. Hurter -, but cf. 60 and 65 (V20/R39 - unrecorded die combination). SNG ANS -. SNG München 849 (same reverse die). McClean 2539 (same obverse die). Rizzo pl. LXI, 5 (same obverse die). HGC 2, 1123 (same obverse die). Pleasant old cabinet tone. Some scratches and slightly double struck on reverse. Very Fine. Apparently an unpublished type in the standard references.
