The Roman Republic. LEAD CAST COCKLE SHELL (AES FORMATUM TYPE)

Central Italy, possibly pre-monetary period, circa 6th–4th century BC. Solid cast lead object in the form of cockle shells, with stylized ribbing imitating natural prototypes.

Objects of this type are often associated with aes formatum and may have functioned as proto-monetary or exchange pieces, although their exact use remains uncertain. The surface shows encrustations and wear consistent with age.
