LEAD CAST COCKLE SHELLS (AES FORMATUM TYPE)
Central Italy, possibly pre-monetary period, circa 6th–4th century BC.
Lot of three (3) solid cast lead objects in the form of cockle shells, with stylized ribbing imitating natural prototypes. Objects of this type are often associated with aes formatum and may have functioned as proto-monetary or exchange pieces, although their exact use remains uncertain.
The surfaces show encrustations and wear consistent with age. 29.58 g.
