At dawn on 1 September 1939 the German armed forces attacked Poland, and the Second World War began. Two days later Great Britain and France declared war on Germany, and at the end of November the Soviet Union invaded Finland. In April 1940 the armies of the Third Reich overran Denmark and Norway, and soon afterwards the Netherlands and Belgium, while France was collapsing under the weight of the German advance. On 10 June Italy too entered the war. The issue of this medal was officially announced by L'Osservatore Romano on 29 June 1940 (after Bartolotti). Silver.
