SALVS POPVLI ROMANI MP OY (Greek script) The Blessed Virgin with the Infant Jesus. Elegant red leather case with a gold emblem and a double gold Greek fret border on the lid. Inside, the engraver’s logo. Uncirculated. According to a pious medieval tradition, the image was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist, and since time immemorial the Roman pontiffs have been devoted to this effigy. Throughout history, the image has been carried in procession through the streets of Rome on numerous occasions to invoke an end to plagues, wars and calamities, not least during the Second World War.
