AE. 19.35 g. 33.5 mm. Dark brown patina. Choice for issue. With old collection’s tag. Good VF. Perseus was one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology, the son of Zeus and Danaë. He is best known for slaying Medusa, the mortal Gorgon whose gaze could turn anyone to stone. With the help of Athena and Hermes, Perseus approached Medusa using a polished shield to avoid looking directly at her and succeeded in cutting off her head.

On his journey home, he rescued Andromeda, who had been sacrificed to a sea monster, and later married her. Perseus became a popular subject in ancient art and coinage, particularly in scenes depicting the defeat of Medusa and his triumph over the forces of evil.
