Anonymous Quadrantal Series. AE Triens, Campanian mint (Cales), 214 BC. D/ Helmeted head of Minerva right; above, four pellets. R/ ROMA. Prow right; above; below, four pellets. Cr. 41/7b. AE. 23.84 g. 30 mm. This coin was struck over a Cr. 38/5 sextans, with the undertype still clearly visible. It is a particularly interesting piece from a numismatic perspective, as it provides clear evidence of how the so-called “Semilibral” series (Cr. 38) was withdrawn from circulation and restruck according to a new, reduced weight standard.
