Central and Southern Campania, Hyrietes. AR Nomos, c. 405-385 BC. D/ Head of Athena left, wearing helmet decorated with owl on olive branch. R/ Oscan ethnic. Man-headed bull right. Rutter 36-47; HN Italy 539; HGC 1 435. AR. 6.76 g. 21 mm. RRR. Extremly rare. Toned; obverse rough and off-centre, otherwise. VF.

The specimen, traditionally attributed to Allifae, bears close affinities to a didrachm of Hyria identified as previously unpublished in 2024.

The comparison is particularly significant with regard to the ethnic and the representation of the man-headed bull, which display marked stylistic similarities.

Of particular relevance is the obverse, on which the head of Athena appears to have been struck from the same die.

These elements suggest that the original attribution to Allifae should be reconsidered and that the specimen should instead be assigned to the coinage of Hyria.
