Octavianus. AR Denarius, mint moving with Octavianus, 36 BC. D/ Bearded head of Octavianus right; around, IMP·CAESAR·DIVI·F·III·VIR·ITER·R·P·C. (Julia) 139. AR. 3.96 g. 20 mm. R. Lightly toned; nice portrait. VF. The Temple of Divus Julius, begun by Octavian and dedicated in 29 BC, marked the site where Julius Caesar was cremated after his assassination. Its altar commemorated the place of his funeral, while a statue of the deified Caesar, associated with the famous comet (sidus Iulium), stood within the temple. The building occupied the eastern end of Caesar’s Forum and was closely connected with the Rostra ad Divi Julii, used for important public and funerary ceremonies. Its restoration under later emperors reflects the enduring importance of Caesar’s deification and memory in Roman imperial ideology.
