On most coins of the Revolutionary period, the term “ORO” (gold) was not used to indicate fineness, but rather the actual quantity of gold, expressed in grams, contained in the alloy.
Thus, an “ORO 0.595” does not indicate a gold fineness of 59.5%. Rather, it specifies that the silver alloy contains 595 milligrams of gold. This was intended to ensure that the coin retained a certain intrinsic value, as gold offered greater stability in value. However, producing a 0.900-fine gold coin with such a small quantity of gold was impractical.
The most effective solution was therefore to strike a large silver coin incorporating the specified gold content, thereby combining the stability of gold with the practicality of a substantial silver coin.
