Commercial and military relations with the Turks were intense and peaceful. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, ruler of a vast but internally unstable empire due to political and religious tensions, sought to strengthen his position through military campaigns, choosing Hungary as his first target. In 1526, Hungary was easily defeated by the Turks, but they did not immediately occupy it. The West did not intervene: the Pope was more concerned with Luther and Charles V, while Luther himself justified not opposing the Turks. Austria took advantage of the power vacuum in Hungary and installed Ferdinand of Habsburg as king, but the use of violent troops generated hostility. The Turks then supported the deposed King Zapolya to oppose Ferdinand, initiating a long conflict. In 1529, Suleiman besieged Vienna, not to conquer Europe, but to obtain recognition of Zapolya’s rule over Hungary. The siege failed due to logistical problems and the onset of winter, but the Turks consolidated their presence in Hungary. A period of intermittent warfare followed, lasting until a provisional peace was signed in 1562. Meanwhile, Austria was abandoned by the Christian West: France allied with Suleiman, while the other European powers were too absorbed in internal religious conflicts to concern themselves with the Hungarian issue, which had by then come to be seen as an internal matter of the Habsburg Empire.
