Kalima in four lines; Quran IX, 33 around. Rev. Name and titles in three lines; mint and date formula around. Malloy -; Schl. -; Album 720. AV. 4.18 g. 23 mm. RRR. VF. This is an early Crusader imitation, apparently unknown and possibly unpublished, still adhering to the traditional Fatimid weight standard. Type derived from Fatimid type Album 719.1, matching Nicol type B1, which was struck at Misr only during the years 430-435 AH.

Central inscription, ‘al-imām / al-Manṣūr’ in two lines; Pseudo-kufic inscription with titles around. BY 26a; Lavoix 5; Malloy 1. AV. 3.69 g. 23 mm. RR. Among the earliest gold coinage produced by the Crusaders in Acre. Good VF.

AV Dinar (Saracenic Bezant), second phase, struck 1148/59-1187. Imitating a Fatimid Dinar of al-Amir Abu ʿAli al-Mansur from Misr mint, dated [50]6 AH. Obv. Central inscription ʿāl / ghāya’ in two lines; kufic inscription with Kalima around. Rev. Central inscription, ‘al-imām / al-Manṣūr’ in two lines; kufic inscription with titles around; mint and date formula in outer margin. BY 25; Malloy 3; Schl. pl. V, 19. AV. 3.88 g. 23 mm. R. About EF. This variety always features normally legible Kufic legends, always from the Misr mint and in many cases partially or completely dated to the following years 506, 508, 509 and 516.

Central inscription, ‘al-imām / al-Manṣūr’ in two lines; Pseudo-kufic inscription with titles around; mint and date formula in outer margin. Cf. BY 25; Cf. Malloy 3; Cf. Schl. pl. V, 19; Cf. Nicol type A, n° 2560. AV. 3.84 g. 21 mm. RRR. About EF. This type was firstly reported by Loewe (Loewe L., Observations on a unique Kufic Gold Coin, London 1849). That is the same type of present coin, struck by different dies, but executed probably by the same engraver and with the same date. Loewe didn't recognize that it was a crusader imitation and attributed it to the Fatimid al-Amir, ascribing to the date of 518 AH, also considering that al-Ma'mun had established a new mint at New Cairo (al-Mu'izziya al-Qahira) in the year AH 516, which operated under al-Amir until the year 524 AH. Malloy classifies this coin as a dinar struck at 'Akka (Acre) in imitation of those of the Fatimid Caliph al-Amir, second phase circa AD 1148-1159.

Imitating a Fatimid Dinar of al-Amir Abu ʿAli al-Mansur from Misr mint. Obv. Central inscription ʿāl / ghāya’ in two lines, dots below; Pseudo-kufic inscription with Kalima around. Rev. Central inscription, ‘al-imām / al-Manṣūr’ in two lines; Pseudo-kufic inscription with titles around. BY 31; Malloy 5e. AV. 3.61 g. 24.5 mm. Good VF.

Lot # 665 - Jerusalem. Christian-Arab AV Dinar (Saracenic Bezant), Acre mint, dated 1251 (Arabic alphanumeric AD date). Obv. Large cross pattée with annullet in the fourth quarter; • + • 'and resurrection, and through whom we are delivered and pardoned' in Arabic in inner margin; • + • 'we are glorified in the Cross of Lord Jesus the Messiah in whom we receive our salvation and life' in Arabic in outer margin. Rev. 'God and One' in Arabic in two lines; • + • 'the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit' in Arabic in inner margin; • + • mint formula and Arabic alphanumeric AD date in outer margin. BY 40; Cf. Malloy 6 (for type); Schl. pl. V, 27 (same). AV. 3.23 g. 22 mm. RR. Tiny flan crack as struck. VF. The Latin kings of Jerusalem struck imitative debased gold 'besanti sarracenati' modelled on the dinars of the Fatimid caliph al-Amir (1101-1130) from about 1148 until 1250, when they attracted the censure of the papal legate Eudes of Châteauroux, who came to Acre with Louis IX. He found it scandalous that Christians should be striking coins bearing 'the name of Mohamed and the number of years from his nativity'. The designs were promptly changed with a prominent cross and legends in Arabic proclaiming the Christian faith of the Holy Trinity with dates 'from the incarnation of the Messiah', from 1251 to 1258 AD, however, the dates on the outer margins of the coins are usually illegible.
