The period from the end of the Battiadian dynasty to the rise of Alexander the Great was the city's golden age. It earned the nickname 'Athens of Africa', hosting important philosophers such as Aristippos, the poet Callimachos and the astronomer Eratosthenes. Silphium was a plant widely used in antiquity as a medicine, condiment and for perfumes. It is mentioned by Herodotus but also by naturalists such as Theophrastus and Pliny the Elder and was considered as valuable as gold and silver. Despite its popularity, however, silphium disappeared completely back in antiquity, probably due to the overcrowding and climatic changes North Africa underwent, combined with the very small habitat in which it grew, a narrow strip of land in Cyrenaica. When the plant began to become scarce, the Greeks and Romans tried to cultivate it, without success. Its collection in the wild was strictly regulated, and a thriving black market was dedicated to its trade. Very little is known about her, except that when she was still a child she was presented as the future successor of the Flavian dynasty, since her father, after his second divorce, had not taken another wife and the other women of the family (Domitilla Major and Domitilla Minor) had already died. When Titus came to power, Julia was given the title of Augusta, which was usually attributed to the emperor's wife. Titus proposed to his brother Domitian to marry Julia, but Domitian refused because he was in love with Domitia Longina. Julia therefore married her cousin, Titus Flavius Sabinus. Upon the death of his father (AD 81), Domitian became emperor and, after repudiating Domitia on suspicion of adultery, it seems that he began a relationship with Julia and had Sabinus killed. Dacian seated right on shield in attitude of mourning; curved Dacian sword below.Woytek 189a; RIC 219.The falx or rhomphaia was a one- or two-handed cutting weapon adopted by the Dacians in the 4th century. This type of sword forced the Romans to partially revise their equipment, especially during Trajan's campaigns in Dacia at the beginning of the 2nd century. The soldiers adopted segmented sleeves and reinforced helmet visors to defend themselves from the cutting blows inflicted by the falx.
