Ex Ars et Nummus (1950-1980)
Lot # 209 - ZEUGITANIA. Carthage. Libyan Revolt (241-238 BC). Shekel. Obv: Head of Herakles left, wearing lion's skin.Rev: ΛIBYΩN. Lion standing right; punic letter above.CNP 433b; MAA 53; SNG Copenhagen 240.Ex Ars et Nummus (1950-1980) with ticket. Traces of overstriking. The great Libyan uprising against Carthage, which broke out between 241 and 238 BC, was one of the most dramatic moments in Carthaginian history. The conflict arose from the discontent of the mercenaries who, after the First Punic War, had not received the payment they had been promised. Tension quickly escalated into a brutal war that involved the Libyan populations and undermined Carthaginian authority at a time when the city was already weakened by its long struggle against Rome. The revolt exposed Carthage’s internal difficulties: financial problems, rivalries among commanders, and a loss of control over the African territories. The battles were fierce, the sieges bloody, and for years the Punic power seemed on the verge of collapse. Only the vigorous intervention of Hamilcar Barca managed to reverse the situation and restore Carthaginian rule over the region. Yet this turbulent period revealed the structural fragility of the state and paved the way for the events that would lead to the Second Punic War. The coinage of the period reflects a system under severe strain. The bronze issues of the Carthaginian mint show clear signs of devaluation, alterations in the alloys, and attempts to stabilise exchange values, all elements that mirror the political and financial crisis of the time. These years saw a progressive impoverishment of the alloys, with an increase in lead and a reduction in tin, indicating a cheaper and less controlled production. The first attempts to imitate silver and billon coins also appear, revealing growing difficulty in obtaining precious metal. Instances of counterfeiting are documented as well, probably linked to the mercenary crisis, as troops sought to secure payment in a context of administrative collapse.
