Interessantissima e curiosa l'iconografia di San Giovanni su cui i principali testi non si soffermano. Giovanni Evangelista è raffigurato, secondo una certa tradizione, come un giovane imberbe. Il calice con il serpente che tiene nella sinistra è un attributo alquanto inconsueto da trovare e deriva da una fonte apocrifa, che ricorda come il Santo, costretto a bere un veleno per non avere sacrificato agli dei, benedisse la coppa dorata, da cui uscirono dei serpenti.
