This striking Stater was minted in Herakleia during the city’s peak period of prosperity. The imagery on the coin vividly reflects the diverse origins of Herakleia's population, particularly those from Thurii and Tarentum. The obverse features the head of Athena adorned with an Attic helmet, which includes a remarkable depiction of Skylla. This design is directly inspired by the contemporary coinage of Thurii and serves as a reminder of the Athenian origins of the Thurians. On the reverse, Herakles is shown grappling with the Nemean Lion, a motif that references both the Dorian heritage of the Tarentine settlers and the city’s name. Herakles was widely regarded as the mythical ancestor of the Dorian Greeks, especially the Spartans, who originally founded Taras.

Slight flan crack and minor flattening on reverse, otherwise, Good Extremely Fine. Exceedingly rare, with only one other specimen known. From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005. The Lucanians were an Italic people speaking Oscan who settled in the central Apennines around 400 BC, south of the Samnites. Their region roughly corresponds to modern-day Basilicata. During the 4th century BC, they frequently threatened the Greek colonies in southern Italy and, in 290 BC, allied with the Romans against the Samnites. However, they later supported Pyrrhus against Rome itself. During the Hannibalic period— the only time they minted coins— the Lucanians likely hoped to achieve definitive revenge against Rome. Yet, when Hannibal withdrew from Italy in 203 BC, the Lucanians were left to face their fate alone.

Rare. As with many of the cities of Magna Graecia, the gold issues of Metapontum are typically associated with periods of abnormal military expenditure. The similarity of the head of Hera here to that on the issues of Tarentum during the time of Alexander the Molossian, and the exceptional appearance of Hera on an issue of Metapontum, suggest that this issue was struck when the city was allied with the Epirote king.

The dating of this magnificent coin is debated, with estimates ranging from 290-280 BC to the more precise year of 302 BC. The latter date ties the coin to the Italian campaigns of Kleonymos, a Spartan general from the Agiad dynasty. Kleonymos, rejected as successor to his father Kleomenes II due to his unpopular rule, sought refuge in Italy around 303/2 BC. He supported the Spartan colony of Tarentum against the Lucanians and captured the Greek city of Metapontion in 302 BC. This stunning coin may have been struck to commemorate his brief victory. Kleonymos's turbulent career continued for three more decades, ending with his failed attempt to conquer Sparta in 272 BC, after which he vanished from historical records.

It was during the Punic occupation of Metapontion that this coin was struck, and like other Punic issues minted at this time in southern Italy, the fabric and execution of strike are neat and precise with thin flans and competent engraving. The coin retains the portrait of Demeter on the obverse (in contrast to the half shekels struck at the same time, which bear a head of Athena), while on the reverse the traditional city emblem of the grain ear is augmented to a pair.
