ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - Π[T]OΛEMAIOY, Draped bust of Lybia right, wearing tainia; below chin, small cornucopia. Svoronos 866 and 871 (Ptolemy II). Weiser 65. SNG Copenhagen 442 (Ptolemy IV-VIII). CPE (Lorber) B482. Green-brown patina. Very Fine. Rare. From the Giovanni Maria Staffieri Collection; privately purchased from Numismatica Aretusa SA - Franco Chiesa, Lugano, in April 1976. From the pen of G.M.S.: An important and rare small Alexandrian bronze minted by Ptolemy III (246-222 BC), featuring a realistic portrait of his ancestor Ptolemy I (305-283 BC) on the obverse. Ptolemy I, the Macedonian general of Alexander the Great and founder of the Lagid dynasty, which ended in 30 BC with the famous Cleopatra VII. On the reverse is the interesting and uncommon depiction of the draped bust of Libya, symbolizing Egypt's domination over the territory.
