An Alexandrian drachm with the plastic and imposing vision of a three-vaulted Roman triumphal arch on the reverse is much sought after, especially as in our case where the sharp and spectacular image in high relief stands out in a coin that does not appear to have been put into circulation after leaving the mint. A splendid specimen, with sharp definition of every detail from the severe imperial portrait on the obverse to the statuary complex decorating the top of the arch on the reverse. A numismatic gem.
The depiction of the triumphal arch on the reverse of Alexandrian drachms, which began with Domitian, ended with Hadrian and it is still to be considered rare and of exclusively Roman stylistic character, with no connection to Greco-Alexandrian or Egyptian architecture. It should therefore be seen as an expression of the assertion of the primacy of the empire capital in the intentions of the respective ruler or possibly confirmation of his occasional victorious war enterprise.
