Egypt, Alexandria Trajan, 98-117. Drachm. (Bronze, 33.10 mm, 15.65 g). RY 15 = AD circa 111/2. ΑΥΤ ΤΡΑΙΑΝ ϹЄΒ ΓЄ [ΡΜ ΔΑΚΙΚ] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. The Emperor standing in elephant quadriga, right, laureate-headed, wearing toga, holding eagle-tipped sceptre and branch; in field, LIE (date). RPC 4605.3. SNG 3943. Nice brown tone, bold portrait, Very Fine. Ex Hirsch Sale 113, 1978, lot 175a (part of). Ex Naville Numismatics Ltd., Auction 67, 01.08.2021, lot 175. Very well-preserved drachm of Trajan, although of lower than average numeral size and weight, but perfectly centred and coated with a uniform original brown patina. The majestic laureate bust of the emperor on the obverse is matched by the animated reverse of the sovereign proceeding triumphantly on a quadriga at the pull of four strong and lively African elephants.
