Egypt. Alexandria. Hadrian, 117-138. Drachm. (Bronze, 36.55 mm, 27.24 g). Dated RY 19 = AD 134/5. AYT KAI TPAIAN ΑΔ [ΡΙΑ CЄΒ] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. L E [N]N EAKΔ Canopus of Osiris right, with horned crown, uraei, disk and plumes, ornamented with figures. Geissen 1172 var. (different headdress and decorations). BMC 778. Dattari 1652-1653. Another rare drachm of Hadrian with an extraordinarily large flan that particularly allows a complete and detailed reading of every component of the large canopic jar of Osiris (see also items 224 and 227 in the collection), depicted on the reverse - from the atef crown to the details of the lid with the deity’s head wearing the Egyptian nemet headdress, and the ritual scenes decorating the body of the canopic jar. A coin that is fit for in-depth historical-artistic-anthropological investigations of the Osirian theology and liturgy, as commonly practised in Egypt from Pharaonic era to the Roman imperial period.
