Egypt. Alexandria. Hadrian, 117-138. Hemidrachm (Bronze, 35.94 mm, 23.65 g). Dated RY 17(?) = AD 132/3. AYT KAIC TPAIAN AΔPIANOC CЄB Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Hadrian right, seen from behind. Rev. Winged Nike sitting on shield, holding a crown and a palm frond; LI Z (date) in field. Dattari-Savio, Supplement 101, ANS 1944.100.58416. RPC III 5849.5 (this specimen). Emmett 1008 (5). Very Fine. Ex Spink Taisei Numismatics Ltd., Zurich, 16.11.1994, lot 827. The dating of this beautiful very rare hemidrachm was indicated by the authority and expertise of Andrew Burnett, whom I do not need to present. It is very well preserved, has a very large modulus, perfectly centred and with a shiny original black patina spread evenly over the entire coin. The winged Nike lying on the shield and showing a crown with her right hand clearly refers to the prospect of victory in the Jewish war, conducted by the Roman army in 132-135 AD which in fact had a positive outcome for the imperial army, ending with the conquest of Jerusalem, since then called Aelia Capitolina, and with the diaspora of the Jewish people.
