Diobol struck solely in the 15th year of Hadrian's Egyptian reign. Given that the emperor and his court remained in Alexandria until late spring of 131 AD, the reverse scene – showing the emperor triumphant seated on a throne atop the deck of a sailing trireme - suggests that this issue may have been minted to commemorate his farewell and departure from Alexandria which he honoured with his auspicious greeting gesture.
