From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Auctions IV, 21.09.1988, lot 296. Ex CNG E-Auction 556, 21.02.2024, lot 367. This tetradrachm of pleasant style brings back the brilliant scene of Isis Pelagia that runs to the right along the surface of the sea in the direction of the port of Alexandria pushed by a sail, inflated by the wind, held by the arms of the deity. It is a fairly common representation on the reverse of Alexandrian bronzes but especially rare on tetradrachms. Isis Pelagia (not Pharia because there is no lighthouse) is found only in the year 17 of Antoninus Pius on the Alexandrian tetradrachms (cf. Emmett 1403). The reference to the commercial port of Alexandria, the most important in the Mediterranean, is clear.
