Egypt, Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius Caesar, 139-161. Drachm (Bronze, 33.20 mm, 23.64 g). Dated RY 12 = AD 148/9. M AYPHΛIOC KAICAP Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius (short beard) right, seen from rear. Rev. L ΔωΔЄKATOV Isis Pharia standing right, holding sail (serpent on sail) and sistrum; before Pharos. Dattari 3204. Geissen 1913. Dattari-Savio Plate 169, 9052 (this coin). Emmett 1889. RPC IV.4.1122.13 (this specimen cited). Nice green-brown patina. Very Fine. From the Dattari collection. Ex Naville Numismatics, Auction 42, 22.07.2018, lot 352. We find again on the obverse of this noble Antonine drachm the proud and strong-willed bust of the young Caesar Marcus Aurelius, while the reverse depicts the popular and loved scene of the Isis Pharia, much sought-after by collectors, which here exceptionally presents on the inner web of the sail the figure of a slithering snake that should refer to the Uraeus sacred to the deity: this is a significant variant of extreme rarity as attested by Emmett's classification.
