Egypt, Alexandria. Julia Mamaea, mother of Severus Alexander 222-235. Tetradrachm (Billon, 25.71 mm, 11.35 g). Dated RY 10 = AD 230/1. IOY MAMAIA CЄB MHT CЄB KC T PA Diademed (with Stephane) and draped bust of Julia Mamaea right. Rev. Cuirassed and draped Emperor on horseback advancing left, raising right hand and holding sceptre in his left; in front, palm branch; L Ι (date) in upper right field. Dattari 4453. Emmett 3204 (5). Very rare. Dark brown patina. Very Fine. Ex Numismatica Aretusa SA, Lugano, (Franco Chiesa). Specimen purchased in October 1978. Uncommon tetradrachm of Julia Mamaea, struck on a broad flan that comfortably accommodates both the engraved figures and the complex obverse legend in their entirety. On the reverse, a cuirassed Severus Alexander on horseback triumphantly celebrates the decennalia of his reign, as confirmed by the coin’s date, and responds to the imperial salutation with the grateful gesture of his raised right arm.
