Fully silvered tetradrachm of Valerian, featuring on the obverse a robust and realistic high-relief portrait of the emperor, struck just months before he was captured in 260 by Shapur I, king of the Sassanid Persians, who defeated him at the Battle of Edessa, deported him, enslaved him, and whose wretched end remains unknown.
